Public reminded of signs to detect the presence of natural gas
EL PASO, Texas – July 2, 2014 – Over the last several days, Texas Gas Service has worked to restore odorization in its natural gas distribution system in El Paso County to normal levels. Odorant levels have been in normal ranges for more than 72 hours and the company will continue to monitor odorant levels throughout the city.
The public is reminded to understand the signs to detect the presence of natural gas. Odorant is used to give natural gas a distinctive odor. Most people describe the smell as rotten eggs or a sulfur-like odor. If El Paso residents smell an odor outside, or smell odorant inside, please do not operate any electrical devices, such as light switches, garage doors, computers, cell phones or landlines. Leave the area immediately, then call Texas Gas Service at 800-959-LEAK (5325) or call 911.
The public should also be aware of other signs of a potential natural gas leak, which include:
- Hissing or blowing sounds
- Standing water continuously bubbling
- Dirt or water blowing in the air
- Dead or decaying vegetation
- Individuals that are performing work on natural gas piping or that are installing natural gas appliances should not rely on smell to determine the presence of natural gas or leaks.
