The ONE Gas internship program welcomed 18 college students this summer, each honing their skills as soon-to-be industry innovators and leaders.

Far from the stereotypical image of interns fetching coffee, these young professionals are helping shape the company’s future. Among them is Ilia, a returning Engineering intern at Texas Gas Service in El Paso.

Since the summer of 2023, Ilia has played an important role in a pivotal project: El Paso’s City Gate #1 initiative. This strategic expansion provides a new gas supply to Texas Gas Service, improves reliability for customers and supports long-term pressure reduction efforts in El Paso.

“Being able to see it in construction was amazing,” Ilia said. “I was able to watch the design come together piece by piece. There is actually natural gas that is about to go through soon. It’s really cool.”

In addition to this significant undertaking, Ilia was also involved in the design of several Main Line Extension projects, all successfully built out as of December 2023. She's continuing her internship and has focused on five to six different larger capacity meter sets slated for construction later this year – a rewarding experience that allows her to see projects through from start to finish.

“It’s a reward to be able to see it out there actually working,” Ilia said. “Driving by with my friends or my family saying, ‘Look at that one. That’s mine.’”

Ilia’s growth extends beyond technical expertise. Interacting with her supportive team in El Paso, she has become more outgoing, confidently asking questions and applying studies to real-world scenarios. Her commitment to service underscores the impact of her work and the growth she has experienced as a ONE Gas intern.

“It feels good to know that it’s impacting other people’s lives,” Ilia said. “A lot of things I work on deal with pressure regulation. Without these pressure reductions, the gas wouldn’t be delivered as efficiently as it is now. Everything that I do is helping regulate pressures down to what our customers need to operate everything in their house that uses natural gas.”
